Get Your Picture Taken for the Tucson Portrait Project!
As most people who frequent Downtown know, the 4th Avenue underpass is a serious construction zone. But not to fear! Big plans for the area are underway, which include extending the trolley route and a special tile project.
Right now, Patch & Clark Design are working towards a goal of snapping the portraits of 7,000 Tucsonans. The photos will then be placed on tiles which will be used in the reconstruction of the underpass.
If you want to be a part of Tucson history, why not visit one of the photo shoots being held through February and get your photo taken?
Penny Wine Tasting at Total Wine
With roughly eight thousand (yep, you read that right) different types of wine, two thousand types of spirits, and one thousand different beers, Total Wine seems to have cornered the market on all things alcohol. In case you haven’t heard, Total Wine is the new beverage store located at 4370 N. Oracle Road. They are open Monday through Saturday from 9:00 a.m. until 10:00 p.m. and Sunday from 10:00 a.m. until 9:00 p.m.
Shop-a-Do behind the Surly Wench
The Tucson Banditas, or “B.A.B.E.” (Banditas Art Brigade and Exchange), put on a Holiday “Shop a Do,” a sort of smaller, more art-centric version of the Street Fair last weekend and before that, on December 6th and December 20th from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. It was in the parking lot behind the Surly Wench, which is on 4th Avenue, so it was technically, according to the flier, at 423 N. Hoff. Local artists and art collectives put their work on display and for sale.
Tranquil and Serene at Westward Look
My mother’s side of the family is scattered all over the world. Once every few years we have a family reunion in Tucson since that is where she and her siblings were raised. She has a brother in Ecuador, another brother in Denmark, and her sister is in California. This year, instead of staying with my parents, we all decided it would be fun to stay at a local resort. Our pick was Westward Look. My mom stays there quite a bit for mini-vacations and thought that it would be the perfect place to accommodate our diverse crowd. This get-together included many older adults, many younger adults, a few college-aged guys, and a ton of small children. Located at 245 E. Ina Road, the Westward Look is perfectly tucked away off the road into the desert, but still close and convenient to anything and everything you could possibly need.
A Mini-Vacation at The Lodge at Ventana Canyon
Looking to get away but not go far? Looking for a quick vacation without the hassle of having to leave Tucson? Want to spend your days relaxing by the pool, playing a round of golf, and enjoying a few cocktails at the end of the evening. Well, The Lodge at Ventana Canyon may be the place you are looking for. My husband and I (along with our children) love to take “mini-vacations” here in town. Simply put, we check into one of the many resorts here in town and pretend we are on vacation. During the summer months rates are spectacular and you avoid all the hassle of having to plan for a long vacation. Located at 6200 N. Clubhouse Lane, The Lodge at Ventana Canyon is it just far enough east to make it seem like you are away from your normal daily stomping grounds.
DJing at Grill on Congress
Last night I guest-deejayed at the Red Room. That’s one side of Grill, the 24-hour diner and open-till-two bar at 100 E. Congress (here’s their MySpace page: http://www.myspace.com/redroomatthegrill). When you go to Grill, don’t bother reading the long description of how to act on the menu. Just know that you’ll probably wait while for your food; it’s not a drive through. And don’t order milkshakes unless you want to wait even longer.

Santa is Bringing the Snow to Tucson
There is not a more jovial season than Christmas time. I love the decorations, the lights, the general good cheer, and most of all Santa. The only thing missing from Christmas in Tucson is snow!!! No problem. The snow will come to us. On Saturday, November 22 at 10:00 a.m. Santa and Mrs. Claus were escorted by the Fire Department as part of “Santa’s Bringin’ the Snow” and made their grand entrance at the Foothills Mall. Upon arrival, 30 tons of manufactured snow was dumped into a cordoned off section of the parking lot and fun ensued. There were snowball fights, people building snowmen, children running through the snow, half of them wondering what this cold, white substance was. We are, afterall, in Arizona.
