I’d mostly thought of Tucson Botanical Gardens for the events I’d seen on their marquis as I drove past – butterfly gardens and “weird plant” sales. But I learned there this past weekend that if you’re looking for a relaxing way to get out of the heat for a little while, the Tucson Bonsai Society is happy to provide one!

“Girls Rock!” Screening at the Loft Cinema -Tucson
Some friends and I congregated at The Loft Cinema, located at 3233 E. Speedway, for the opening of the “Girls Rock!” documentary. My friend Nikki and I had been anticipating the release of this movie in our town for months and were overjoyed when we found out that The Loft, a non-profit, community supported cinema, would be screening this film. The venue is our independent film mainstay, where we frequently attend everything from local film festivals to 80’s music sing-alongs. If it wasn’t for The Loft, I wouldn’t have seen The Rocky Horror Picture Show in my teens as it is meant to be seen, crowd participation, tossed-toast, and all.
A desert oasis - Tohono Chul Park in Tucson, Arizona.
It’s a hidden gem in Tucson. That’s such a cliché, I know. Yet it’s true. I don’t mean hidden in the sense that it’s unknown, but in the sense that once inside the park, the feeling of being in a city fades away. The park is dedicated to educating people about the desert ecology and culture, and does so by being a lush, serene place to explore or just sit and contemplate. I did a bit of both.
